She’s already composed an electronic opera with Mt. Sims and The Knife, now Janine Rostron aka Planningtorock is about to release her debut album ‘W’, a record that whisks together regal chamber music with leftfield electronica; a very English tradition melded with the established creativity and boundary-pushing of Rostron’s adopted home of Berlin. It’s not officially released until next Monday (24th) but DFA have given The Hype Machine the record to stream for the excited and the intrigued.
And intrigued and excited you should be. It’s an album that’s shockingly brilliant, one that takes you hurtling down dark paths, careening round twists and turns before slinging you down at the side of the road, gasping for breath. From the bizarre but enthralling beginning of ‘The Breaks’ (“Don’t be surprised if I’m ripping out my eyes, I’m on fire” are the most absurdly ace lyrics we’ve heard in a long time), through the tender warnings of ‘Janine’ and the orchestral warp of ‘The One’ plus everything in between, it’s a truly innovative record from an emerging eccentric.
