I’ve been loving on Entrepreneurs since I saw him live at the end of a long, cold day in November of last year. Some people have described him as R’n'Beefheart , but I prefer to tag him as something like sci-fi intelli-tronica. Whatever way you want to summarise the Entrepreneurs sound as, it’s refreshing, creative and nothing short of totally ace. We sent the brains behind the music – Adam M. Crisp, creator of tracks like ‘Revenge Platter’ and Fuck Tactics: – some questions so you could all get to know him better.
We hear you’re into science documentaries. Who’s best – Brian Cox or Patrick Moore? Would you consider letting Brian Cox make a guest appearance with Entrepreneurs given his past with D:Ream?
Brian Cox is the don the right now, and yes there’s always space in my band (and heart) for the smiliest man on TV since Carol Smillie. Although, I would like to give a shout out to “Pro Jim Al-Khalili”:http://www.jimal-khalili.com/. He’s doing good things on BBC 4, and gets all heavy and (almost) spiritual. His documentary on Chaos Theory brings a tear to my eye everytime.
The first time we saw you was at the Neon Gold show at XOYO. It looked quite complicated to our tiny mind. Do you prefer the process of writing music to recreating it live?
Yeah probably. But its chalk and cheese init. I consider the writing/recording side of things art and the live set is pure showbiz. Both with their pains and pleasures. A live show is a complete farce of false emotion and prempted drama. The only down side is I’m the one thats got to do it. To me, the whole thing is absurd – standing on a stage while people watch you sing and dance. Quite funny really. No bad thing at all.
Anything you’ve learnt from being in other bands that you’re bringing into this project?
Probably plenty in a ‘what not to do’ kind of way. I like to think I bring punk rock values to anything I do. That was instilled many bands back. And I suppose numerous set-backs over the years have just forced me to not give a fuck about pleasing anyone anymore. I know now i’m better off when I only trust my own judgement.
Why did you decide to do Entrepreneurs alone?
See above, ha. The politics in a creative process with a band just got really tedious. Like; there’s a bass guitar player in this band, so I suppose I better write a bass guitar part for this song even though it doesn’t need one blablabla. The creative spark is such a weird god-sent thing that it feels inherently wrong to dilute it for the sake of keeping everyone happy.
We described ‘Revenge Platter’ as like the soundtrack to a Stanley Kubrick film. Got any soundtracks you can recommend to us?
Kind of obvious but the Vangelis Bladerunner soundtrack is epic. Just then I heard a loud roaring across the horizon. Building to crescendo, it got to a point where I thought: this is it, a nuclear bomb has hit London and the blast wave is swelling out this way at unstoppable speed – hold on to something, i’m about to be turned to dust. Then it promptly faded away. Must have been the wind. I seem to remember the Bad Boys 2 soundtrack being good.
Your other area of expertise is entomology (hope this isn’t a tall story making us look gullible) – what’s your favourite insect related fact?
Only female mosquitoes bite. They need the protein in blood to reproduce. Adult mosquitoes don’y feed on blood. They feed on flower nectar, juices and decaying matter to get the energy to fly. So keep that in mind.
