Thank the stars we’re through with the best albums of two-thousand-and-whatever: now those emerging bands of the last year can get on with their forwards marching. None more so than Cymbals Eat Guitars, a Staten-Island four-piece whose Pavement-inspired debut, ‘Why There Are Mountains’, rang with fearless conviction through every track of sprawling, screaming magnificence last spring.

Cymbals Eat Guitars are set to return to the UK mid-February in advance of the release of an abridged version of ‘Wind Phoenix’, the next single to be taken from that debut. The B-side, a ragged, swollen version of Elliot Smith’s ‘Ballad Of Big Nothing’, preserves the pathos of the original while stamping it with Cymbals’ rambling intensity. Intrigued? You should be.
