Like a series of faded brushstrokes of music’s biggest names in dark, damp stone hollows, Brighton freshlings Cave Painting claim to be joining the dots between such luminaries as Kanye West and Fleetwood Mac, distilling their influential oeuvres into fresh soundbites. Whilst the 5 piece are unlikely to be flanked by the likes of Rihanna and Nicki Minaj a la Yeezy (or at least for the time being, anyway), we like the idea of Mr West’s braggadocio stylings inspiring something that seems positively meek in comparison.
That said, there’s plenty of power in Cave Painting’s quiet side. ‘Midnight Love’ arrives in a river of cymbals before stretching out into the kind of luxuriously laidback beauty Vampire Weekend would do more of if they stopped jetsetting around the world so much.
The band left this bit of semi-cryptic poeticism on their soundcloud page. Setting the mood for what happens when the play button gets hit….
curled up toes for walking on rocks and sand. blessed by the sun. calmed by waving. the stone you take home. tan lines fade. a summer was made. me and four (you’s). the shark. the lark. island. forever. being a spectrum. a sunbeam. a collective. the water after dark. (kilo)meters apart. those calming palms. say yeah palms. leaving our markings. footprints behind. everything we share as five. CAVE PAINTING.
Cave Painting aren’t just about escaping through drifting off to imagery of palm trees and peaceful shorelines though. ‘Leaf’ shows a more active side to them, crashing through with that golden percussive echo and steady, expansive bass line that suggests more road tripping than day dreaming.
