Manchester’s Wu Lyf shroud themselves in enough obscurity and ambiguity to justify being in a band that comes off like a musical cult. Embracing symbols, masks and soliciting extortionate donations (their now sold out demo CD’s were on sale for £50 each), World Unite; Lucifer Youth Foundation (or previously Wu Tang inspired ‘All In This Together Now Crew’ and ‘Vagina Wolf’), describe themselves through only a mysterious tumblr page and the music below.

If the intention was to remain under the radar then tough, because this is the most refreshing British band we’ve heard for an age. ‘Heavy Pop’ is a piece of music seemingly out of nowhere, a track that has you holding on for dear life through a series of strangled echoes and atmospherics. With shades of Sigur Ros, it also features the most incredible vocal from a new British band we’ve maybe ever heard.

Then there’s ‘Concrete Gold’, which overwhelms in it’s dreamy keyboard codas and more incredible snarling courtesy of the bands unknown singer. Wu Lyf are offering something beyond the norm of British music. 2010 just got interesting.
