Oberhofer - Away Frm U

If, like us, the news that MGMT’s forthcoming second album doesn’t contain any ‘Kids’ or ‘Time To Pretend’-sized singles makes you want to feed your Hunters to next door’s Rottweiler, smoke your holiday plane ticket and maybe even cancel summer altogether, then listen up.
Meet 19-year-old Brad Oberhofer. When his songs got too big to be cooped up in his Washington bedroom he moved to NY, formed a band and christened it after his surname (hey, if Hanson and Bon Jovi say it’s OK then it’s OK). An intern at Matador, his demos fell into the paws of the big bosses who apparently flipped out. After hearing it ourselves, we’re guessing his tea-making and photocopying days are pretty much caput.
The tunes see Brad’s strict classical background locking horns with teenage musings, the freakish folk-fuzz of Animal Collective and pop hooks of Weezer. The result is erratic, beautiful and pretty damn exciting. ‘Petz’ sounds like Brad pirouetting around a zoo gift shop, knocking chattering monkey toys, bouncing balls and rain sticks off the shelves. Meanwhile, ‘Away Frm U’ demonstrates his versatility and knack for a lush pop melody.
