Gil Scott-Heron - Where Did The Night Go ?

Posted by Imran on 18 November 2009

Monday night’s BBC Newsnight, heralded the return of black music pioneer Gil Scott-Heron. He was lauded as “the godfather of hip-hop”, the “black Bob Dylan” and as important as John Lennon.

Some, or maybe all these things may be true, but none are important. If you haven’t heard much Gil Scott-Heron before, like I hadn’t until recently, all you need to know is that a consistently pioneering artist has made another great new record, one that will be regarded as one of the best of 2010.

The first glimpse of the ‘I’m New Here’ LP can be downloaded here or below. It’s a insomnia riddled, paranoia infused, pulsating piece of electronica that clocks in at just over one minute long but stays with you a lot longer than that.

“Long ago the clock washed midnight away, bringing the dawn…Oh god, I must be dreaming” Gil gurgles, in the kind of voice that you know has battled many a demon in the wee hours. The video at the top of the post shows Gil recording the track in the studio. More from this amazing record as soon as we have it…
