(zoo kid)!
Who?
Zoo Kid, aka Archy Marshall, is a teenage Londoner. His songs so far – Spring’s ‘Baby Blue’, ‘Ocean Bed’ plus most recent single ‘Out Getting Ribs’, have ranged from reverbed oldies (think Spectrals) to fresh takes on the gritty pop of Jamie T.
Why should we keep listening?
This ragged, guitar-led track is the best example of what he always gets right; it’s gruff, cigarette stained and crackling but delivers mesmerising soul.
What should we know?
1. He’s 16. Like most boys of that age he lives with his Mum.
2. Unlike most 16 year olds – who in our experience like Football Manager and shouting – he isn’t afraid to get a little philosophical.
“The guitar was inspired by a close friend Jerk Curb, but only in the tuning.” he explains of Out Getting Ribs “The riffs and melodies have all been created to enhance ‘a cliff hanger ending’ throughout. The lyrics are very intellectual and so listeners who know me stand no chance in understanding them. An outsider however may be of some accurate interpretation”.
3. He likes WH Auden. ‘Victor’ inspired some of the lyrics for ‘Ocean Bed’.
4. His inspirations are Elvis Presley, Fela Kuti and Gene Vincent. His favourite band at the moment is Kindness.
5. The video for directed by Pegs aka Pegah Farahmand. Her brother Saam has previously directed videos for Klaxons, The XX and Cheryl Cole. This is Pegah’s first. That’s two stars in the making then…
